Cambodia: Phnom Penh, Thursday

Our last day in Cambodia got off to a late start (see the last paragraph of the previous day’s post for further explanation). We decided to take it easy and do a short walking tour of town. By the time we got started it was almost midday and the heat was extreme. A tuk tuk ride took us to our first stop: a Buddhist temple. It was under construction and the visit was quite honestly pretty lame…except… The temple was home to Sambo the elephant. Sambo was hungry and so Marta and Joe encouraged me to feed him (see our other post about that experience).

After a stop at the post office and a walk along the riverfront we were all dripping with sweat. We picked out random stores we had no interest in buying anything from just to enter for their air conditioning (code word: stone sculptures). We found a lot of good stores selling stone sculptures between the riverfront and the central market. From there we ate lunch at another one of the Friends Restaurants called Romdeng (http://www.friends-international.org/shop/restaurants.asp). If you happen to be in Phnom Penh, be sure to check them out.

The final big decision came when we had to decide between the Royal Palace (on the to-do list,  but overpriced and the rain looked to be on the horizon) or the swimming pool. So after we got done swimming we packed and headed for the airport.

Sad to leave Cambodia that afternoon. Was a really fantastic trip. Can't say enough about the people: incredibly humble and welcoming.

Sambo - with meaty little school children in the background in case he gets hungry.
Riverfront area by day
Royal Palace (from the outside). The pool seemed more appealing.

The correct decision on our last day.
